Milia Seeds/Oil Seeds
Have you ever had some little white bumps on your skin under the eyes and they just disappear within a few weeks? They are sometimes mistaken for acne or blackheads. In fact, they are milia seeds, not related to acne or blackheads, and not caused by applying eye cream. Milia seeds are harmless but do affect the overall impression of the face, giving a rough skin texture that may cause upsetting.
What is milia seed
Milia seeds are small, white bumps that appear on the skin, especially under the eyes. They look like white sesame on the face. They are small cysts that are caused by keratin trapped underneath the surface of the skin, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
The skin around the eyes has the thinnest (0.07mm) and most fragile skin on the entire face. It is lacking in sebaceous glands and metabolic process. In addition to its constant blinking and moving actions, the skin around the eyes tends to be dry, tired and prone to develop issues.
Milia are harmless and go away on their own. However, if there are a lot of them or some of them are struggling to go away, it can make the skin look rough and ruin the makeup.
Causes
1. Hormonal Imbalance + Improper Cleaning Habits
When our body is on an imbalanced hormonal level, the sebaceous gland will be stimulated to secrete more than usual sebum. If the washing is not proper or thorough, the sebum and keratin may build up in the pores, causing the formation of milia.
2. Spleen Weakness:
In Chinese medicine, the spleen is responsible for fat metabolism. When the spleen is weak and does not function properly, the fat in the body will not be metabolised and will build up in the pores instead, forming milia.
3.Poor Skincare Habits:
Applying eye cream does not cause the formation of milia. However, frequent or aggressive exfoliation may scratch the skin and leave a scar where keratin may then build up underneath the skin, causing the formation of milia.
Symptoms
Two types of milia: mature and premature. Premature milia can be treated by continuous cleansing and oil controlling. Mature milia do not usually go away on their own.
