Lips have long been celebrated as a sign of beauty. Some women have lips that can sink a thousand ships while others are struggling to draw and create their dream lips. If you are the latter and want to wake up with sexy-looking lips, no worries, aesthetic treatments can help reshape and rebuild the lips you long dream for.
The highest point of the upper lips is called the apex of the cupid’s bow. Philtrum is the vertical indentation in the middle area of the upper lip extending from the bottom of the nose to the upper lip. The protruded area of the centre of the upper lip is called lip tubercle.
Upper and lower lips join at the oral commissures. The red areas of the lips are called vermilion that is covered in continuity with the oral mucosa.
Vermilion border is the rim of skin that joins the vermilion and surrounding skin. Cupid’s bow is the feature of an upper lip that has a double curve contour, and which has been given the Roman God of Love name.
○ Thin lips are lips that are thin and have less volume. They will get thinner when smiling. Thin lips are a sign of ageing and often give an impression of cold and unfriendly.
○ Shapeless lips are lips that do not have a well-defined or even shape.
Ideally, the contour of our lips will create a natural curve that looks like the letters M, m, w, or u when we are resting our face.
The corners of the mouth usually rest exactly even with the centre of the pupils when we are looking straight ahead. On a resting face, we can see 2mm of the maxillary central incisors; while on a smiling face, we can see 2/3 area of them. The ideal thickness ratio of upper and lower lip is 1:1.6 (or 1:1.5).
Lower lips appear slightly fuller than upper lips. Upper lips are plump and pillowy, and rest on top of lower lips. Lower lips projection should lie to a line drawn in the nose-lip-chin plane.
Types of Lip Shapes
What is a M-shaped lip?
M-shaped lip covers a range of features:
1. Double-M line: Letter M appears on the upper and lower curve of the upper lip, like a flying seagull.
2. Triple lobe/ lip tubercles: One located in the centre of the upper lip. Two located on the lower lip which has an indentation between them. Lips with three tubercles are considered a feature of attractive lips in Korean aesthetic beauty.
Although M-shaped lips are highly favourable, some of the non-M-shaped lips have attracted a lot of attention too.
The first type is smiling lips. People with smiling lips look like they are smiling all the time, even when they are not, giving an impression of friendly and easy going. Their lips have the moderate thickness and fullness, defined contour, and an upwards extension towards the corners of the mouth.
The second type is lips with pronounced lobes: People who fall into this type have pronounced tubercles on their lips, their tubercles are easily visible from any direction. Their lower lips are usually of moderate fullness, giving an impression of friendly.
The last type is full, thick lips: They are perfectly balanced lips with proportionately full upper and lower lips. Their lips are a prominent and unique facial feature, giving an impression of confidence and positivity. It is not difficult to find celebrities with full lips who are considered as confident and attractive figures.
The ideal lips should have a defined contour, perfect size regarding the nose, eyes, and face shape, pronounced lip lobes, fullness, colour in red, and outwards lift-up at the corners of the mouth. When we get older, our lips lose their volume and fullness, and become thinner. Also, people with uneven or shapeless lips want to create their ideal lips via aesthetic treatments.
What is it?
Hyaluronic acid (HA), also known as hyaluronate, is naturally found in tissues and cells. In aesthetic treatment, hyaluronic acid can act as a filler and is injected into the dermis layer to fill up the folds/depressions or plump certain areas such as lips, cheeks, nose and chin. The injected hyaluronic acid will smooth and fill lines and wrinkles, and add volume to the face naturally. As hyaluronic acid can be naturally metabolised and will not remain in the body, there are no side effects of injecting HA. Also, having repeated courses of HA injection is safe and effective for long term results.
How does it work?
Hyaluronic acid solution will be injected into the lips. The injected hyaluronic acid molecules will add volume and pump the indented areas, resulting in a fuller, hydrated, and natural looking lips. The injection technique also allows fine adjustment on the lip shape.
1. Face-to-face consultation: Confirmation of a detailed plan of injection areas and dosage after fully understanding the client’s conditions and desired results.
2. Pre-treatment preparation: Clean and disinfect the injection areas. Confirm the injection solution has not been opened.
3.Injection: Injecting the solution at the lips. Massage the injection areas while injecting to create the desired lip shape.
4. Post-treatment care.
