If your face often gets flaky, itchy, red, or acne in all seasons, you may have damaged skin barrier or sensitive skin. Study shows that 30-40% of the population has sensitive skin. In fact, barrier impairment is strongly associated with sensitive skin. Any mistreat and improper skincare routines may further irritate and harm them. So, how aesthetic treatments help to sooth the sensitivity and rebuild the skin barrier?
What is sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is a suboptimal health status of the skin, an intermediate status between being healthy and unhealthy, which results from complex processes involving the skin barrier, nerves, blood vessels, immunity, and inflammation. When the skin is irritated externally, it is likely to respond to the irritants in different ways such as erythema, papules, telangiectasia (spider veins), sensation of tingling and burning, and loss of tolerance to normal cosmetics. The skin condition is called sensitive skin. In fact, the damaged skin barrier is associated with the development of sensitive skin.
Simply put, the skin barrier is a physical barrier of the skin, which consists of sebum and the stratum corneum.
○Sebum barrier: Sebum barrier is a layer of sebum covering the outermost layer of the skin. It is an emulsification product of sebum (secreted by sebaceous glands), lipids (waste from the disintegration process of keratin, and sweat. The sebum barrier is composed of triglycerides, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol.
○ Stratum corneum: A “bricks and mortar” structure formed by corneocytes and intercellular lipids. The intercellular lipid is composed of ceramides, free fatty acids, cholesterol, etc.
Stratum corneum is made up of multiple layers of corneocytes (imagine them as the “bricks”), each of which is encased and supported by a coating of intercellular lipids (imagine them as the “mortar”). This “bricks and mortar” structure and sebum barrier function together and protect the skin as a brick wall. Therefore, the strength and integrity of the stratum corneum and sebum barrier directly affect the health of skin.
A healthy, strong skin barrier is excellent in keeping away external stimulants such as irritants and UV, preventing transepidermal loss of water and other cellular substances, and anti-inflammation.
Causes
Damaged skin barrier is nearly all man-made and no one was born with barrier impairment. However, sensitive skin could be man-made or happen naturally.
1.Aggressive products:Products containing hormone, fragrance or high concentration of acid are aggressive products that can cause irritating reactions of the skin.
2. Overwash or aggressive exfoliation can damage the sebum barrier, which will weaken the skin protection, leaving the skin becoming more fragile towards external stimulants.
3. Skin suffering from skin diseases, such as rosacea, hormone-dependent dermatitis, or lupus erythematosus is constantly under the threat of barrier impairment.
4. Some external stressors such as extreme warm weather, UV or air pollution can damage the skin barrier, cause dilation of blood capillaries, and lead to facial redness.
Symptoms
- Skin feels tight, tingling, burning, or itching.
- The stratum corneum becomes thin. Skin is prone to allergic reactions and redness.
- Skin is prone to redness. When it is too warm or too cold, the face will go red and hot.
- The skin feels flaky and dry and shows declined ability in retaining water. Putting on moisturiser does not help improving the dehydration condition.
- Prone to outbreak of closed comedones in small areas. The condition keeps coming back after treatment.
- Prone to provoking allergic reactions even under mild stimulation.
- Persistent skin inflammation causes a tired-looking appearance.
Affected people
Sensitive skin; Often happens on women more than men; People with skin diseases; people with underlying skin inflammation condition; People who are prone to facial redness.
