Facial Redness/capillary vessels

Does the redness on your face bother you? Does your face often turn red no matter if you feel cold or hot? And it lasts for a long time? Perhaps a green primer or concealer can hide it away temporarily, but getting anesthetic treatments can help improve it from the root cause!

What is face redness

Facial skin with a serious redness condition may develop visible capillary vessels (telangiectasias).

Facial skin redness is also known as telangiectasias in dermatology. When our skin is irritated, it causes capillary vessels to expand and eventually to show through the skin. Temporary enlarged vessels will appear as facial redness (blushing) for a short period of time, however, frequent blushing will develop local facial redness (erythema).

People with obvious capillary vessels on their face generally have thinner stratum corneum on their facial skin and have their capillaries distributed closer to the skin surface. Therefore, their skin is more sensitive and easier to cause redness, itchy and swelling when exposed to irritants. Visible capillary vessel is one of the signs of sensitive skin.

Causes

The skin redness and visible capillary vessels are mainly caused by a thin stratum corneum. The thin stratum corneum provides less protection than a normal thickness one, causing the capillaries to be located closer to the skin surface and hence more exposed to external change. Capillaries will expand when contacting irritants and cause different skin conditions.

1. Inborn factor

Some people were born with skin that is prone to show redness. Some people have thinner stratum corneum that make their skins to be more sensitive to irritants and causing skin redness.

2. Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin usually has thinner stratum corneum. This skin type is more sensitive than others when they are exposed to irritants such as sunlight, medicine, makeup products and change of temperature. The irritation reaction will cause small blood vessels to dilate. Repeated dilation of small blood vessels will make them visible and permanent.

3. Prolonged sun exposure

Sun exposure and hot and dry weather in summer can irritate our skin and cause redness on the face. Also, frequent entering an air-conditioned room straight after a sunbath will cause the skin unstable and appear red.

4. Weak or damaged skin barrier

Some poor skincare routines can damage and weaken our natural skin barrier and hence cause skin redness, for example, over-exfoliation, using soap based or strong base cleanser, washing face with too cold or too hot water, washing face with hot water and cold water alternatively, and rubbing face roughly.

5. Unhealthy diet

Alcohol, coffee and spicy food can cause dilation of small blood vessels and skin redness, and increase the risk of developing visible capillaries.

Symptoms

People who have visible capillaries on their face generally have a more red skin tone than people who haven’t, which indicates that their face is continuously under a redness condition. The redness on the face usually appears at the cheeks and nose wings, with rounded edges and in symmetry. Skin with these symptoms has thin stratum corneum and is sensitive. Emotional swing, low temperature or high temperature can trigger an even more red skin tone. People with severe facial redness are prone to hyperpigmentation.

The redness on the face will give a dull and rough skin texture.  The skin’s low tolerance towards irritants makes the skin fragile and sensitive, when it is exposed to irritants, it easily displays itchy, redness or other skin reactions. These reactions also take a long time to heal.

Affect groups

Sensitive skin, light-coloured skin with thin stratum corneum, skin with existing skin problems, skin with inflammatory condition, or skin often showing redness.
