Overproduction of sebum on the skin

Oily skin is an unwanted condition. Overproduction of sebum is often the undelying cause.  Use of computer screens, digital devices and general pollution can stimulate the production of sebum which can lead to other skin problems if not treated. Treatment of improving overproduction of sebum should be part of your regular skin rejuvenation. Such treatments are provided by specialist skin clinics.

What is overproduction of sebum

The sebum (oil) on our skin is naturally produced by sebaceous glands that are located in the dermis. The produced sebum will be transported to the epidermis, covering our skin surface. The sebum is essential for protecting our skin, preventing excessive evaporation of water from the skin, and moisturising the skin. However, overactive sebaceous glands produce excessive amounts of sebum and cause the skin oily.

Skin being dehydrated is one of the main reasons for oily skin. When the skin is dehydrated and water keeps evaporating from the skin, it will cause an oil-water imbalance in the skin. As part of the natural defense mechanism, the sebaceous glands will then produce more sebum to prevent further water loss, which will make the skin further oily. Therefore, sebum production and skin hydration are strongly correlated. People with dry skin or oily skin type can face the problem of overproduction of sebum due to dehydration.

Better solving the problem as soon as possible. Oily condition of the skin can deteriorate over time. If it is not treated properly in time, it may become a long term, severe problem, unfavoring the overall skin health.

Causes

1. Dry or dehydrated skin

Healthy skin has a good oil-water balance. However, when there is excessive loss of water from the skin, the oil-water balance of the skin will be disrupted. Our skin then initiates its self-defense and protection mechanism to protect the skin from dehydration by producing sebum and covering it on the skin surface. This condition can be worsened in hot weather or summer as sweating drains water out of the body and skin, which will deteriorate the oil-water balance.

2. Hormonal imbalance

Under normal physiological functioning, the secretion of every hormone in our body is well balanced. However, when the balance is being disrupted, there will be too little or too much hormone secreted in the body, causing abnormal functionality. Hormonal imbalance will speed up the water loss from the body and hence cause the development of oily skin. Hormonal imbalance can be caused by stress or sleep deficiency.

3. Skin barrier damaged

Skin with acne problems usually have damaged skin barrier, dehydrated skin, and oily skin at the same time. Study shows that acne skin loses more water via epidermis and produces more sebum than non-acne skin.

4. Food preference

Smoking, drinking and consuming food that is greasy and spicy can affect our body metabolism and disrupt the normal performance of sebaceous glands which contribute to the sebum production.

5. Improper skincare routine

Be aware of the ingredients of skincare products, the oil based ingredient can block the skin and stop the water from being absorbed. Skin that does not get sufficient hydration will stimulate the production of sebum.

6. Poor hygiene

Thorough cleansing is important to maintain good skin hygiene. Without a proper cleansing, dust or pollutants from the air will be trapped and piled up on the skin, which will stimulate the sebum secretion and increase the chance of clogging skin pores.

7. Long-term computer use

The electrostatic field generated from the computer monitor dehydrates our skin and results in promoting sebum secretion.

Oily skin condition can be a natural body phenomenon such as the oily skin type and combination skin type. It can also be triggered by other factors such as skin dehydration, overactive sebaceous glands, food preference, etc.

Symptoms

Symptoms include overly oily skin, dry skin, dull skin, large pores, whiteheads, blackheads, damaged skin barrier, etc.
