Keratosis Pilaris/Chicken Skin

Have you noticed patches of tiny bumps on your face or other people’s faces? These bumps are usually mistaken as whiteheads or acne. In fact, they are a skin condition called keratosis pilaris. If you are suffering from this condition and want to get rid of them, which aesthetic treatment can help?

What is keratosis pilaris

Keratosis pilaris, also known as “chicken skin”, is a chronic genetic disorder caused by abnormal keratin accumulation of the hair follicles.

Keratosis pilaris often happens on the backs of the upper arms, part of the face that produces more oil, outer thighs and butts. They are characterised by the presence of tiny rough bumps on the hair follicle, sometimes appearing red around the bumps. Most common in the adolescent population due to their high hormonal level.

When Keratosis pilaris occurs on the face, it commonly affects the sides of the nose, chin, and forehead. Although they don’t hurt or itch, they can feel rough, bumpy and affect our appearance.

Causes

Keratosis pilaris is a genetic skin disorder; the cause is mostly associated with the gene.

However, there are non-genetic factors:

Have not removed makeup or cleanse the face thoroughly;

Photo-damaging such as prolonged exposure to the sun;

Overwash the face and cause the damage of skin barrier;

Dry or dehydrated skin;

Change of hormonal level – Teenagers generally have a higher secretion of oil on their skin. If they do not clean their skin properly, the oil may block the opening of hair follicles and lead to the accumulation of keratin instead of exfoliating;

Symptoms

Keratosis pilaris often appears as keratinised papules, patched bumps with rough surfaces, and in skin colour or pink. It is better in summer, worse in winter. The skin can sometimes feel itchy in winter. Commonly shown as tiny translucent bumps on the sides of the nose.

There are some common locations affected by keratosis pilaris, but have been overlooked, such as erythema on the temples of men, blushed cheeks, chicken skin or redness on the shoulder blades, forearms, calves, and arms.

You can easily self-examine to find out whether you have keratosis pilaris.
