When you’re out and about, allergens (过敏原) are everywhere. Whether it’s seasonal allergies or food allergies, these are not things to ignore—if medication is needed, it should be taken. So, how do we refer to 过敏药 or 敏感药 in English?
The correct terms are allergy medicines or anti-allergic medicines. These are commonly available at a pharmacy or drugstore, and most of them fall under the category of non-prescription drugs (非处方药), meaning they can be bought without a doctor’s authorization. On the other hand, prescription drugs (处方药) require a doctor’s note and must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacist.
Allergies (过敏) are often accompanied by symptoms such as:
-
Itchy (发痒)
-
Sneezing (打喷嚏)
-
Erythema (红疹)
-
Wheezing (喘气)
-
Swelling (肿胀)
-
Red eyes / Watering eyes (眼睛发红 / 流泪)
-
Blocked nose (鼻塞)

There are different medications designed to address these symptoms. Common over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medicines include:
● Reactine
A non-prescription allergy medicine that helps relieve multiple allergic symptoms.
● Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
Highly effective for symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, and itchy eyes. It also helps relieve itchy skincaused by general allergic reactions. As one of the most commonly used allergy drugs, Benadryl is also helpful in relieving cold symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. However, it may cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and constipation.
There is also a topical Benadryl cream, which works similarly to relieve itchiness and other skin symptoms triggered by allergies. It works fast and, being a topical product, is generally safer with fewer side effects—but its effect is not long-lasting.

● Claritin
Relieves a variety of allergy symptoms and is also available without a prescription.
● Zyrtec (Cetirizine Hydrochloride Drops / 盐酸西替利嗪滴剂)
Another widely used allergy medicine, especially effective for those who suffer from seasonal allergies or have sensitive skin (敏感肌). It is often used to treat allergic rhinitis (过敏性鼻炎) and pollinosis (花粉症). Many people with pollen allergies experience relentless sneezing and dry, itchy eyes during springtime—Zyrtec provides fast and effective relief.
All the above are OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, and most brands also offer children’s versions.

Studies show that 1 in 3 people will experience an allergic reaction at some point in their lives. About 1 in 6 children has had a skin condition related to allergies, especially eczema (湿疹). In China, the prevalence of allergic diseases has reached 37.3%—a remarkably high number.
Allergies are incredibly common in our daily lives. If you notice early warning signs—such as sneezing, itchy eyes, or a runny nose—it’s best to take allergy medicine immediately. If you’re prone to allergies, it’s wise to carry anti-allergic medicine (敏感药) with you at all times. Also, regular exercise to boost your immune system is one of the best ways to stay protected.
