Microblading in Chinese

The term microblading is likely familiar to many women. These days, we often come across it in beauty salons or medical aesthetic clinics. But what exactly does it mean in Chinese?

In the context of modern medical aesthetics, microblading generally refers to semi-permanent makeup(半永久定妆). This cosmetic technique blends elements of plastic surgery and traditional makeup artistry. It has evolved from traditional tattooing methods into today’s comprehensive semi-permanent makeup procedures.

The word microblade literally means “thin blade.” This explains the principle behind modern microblading: using microneedles or micro blades to implant pigments into the deeper layers of the skin. This technique creates a long-lasting makeup effect without color distortion or side effects. The pigments naturally fade over 2–3 years, which is why the results are considered semi-permanent rather than permanent.

Early forms of semi-permanent eyebrow tattooing originated in South Korea and became popular worldwide due to their convenience and time-saving benefits. At that time, microblading was more specifically used to describe semi-permanent eyebrow tattooing(半永久纹眉). As medical aesthetic technology advanced, the scope of semi-permanent makeup expanded significantly.

Today, semi-permanent treatments go beyond just eyebrows. They include lash enhancement eyeliner(美瞳线), hairline enhancement(发际线), and lip color correction(改唇色). These procedures enhance various facial features, significantly reduce time spent on daily makeup and removal, and help individuals maintain a fresh, natural look even without cosmetics.

Modern semi-permanent makeup has become highly sophisticated and safe. Unlike traditional tattooing, it avoids heavy-metal-based pigments and is no longer a permanent, irreversible process. Instead, it embraces more natural, fashionable designs that align with contemporary beauty trends and values. As a result, microblading has become a widely recognized umbrella term for all semi-permanent makeup techniques. For clarity, the more specific term eyebrow microblading is now often used to refer solely to semi-permanent eyebrow treatments, helping avoid any confusion.
