Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Hair removal has always been a major concern for many women. After all, most women aren’t naturally smooth like a “boiled egg”—thick or dark body hair in certain areas is a common issue.

Nowadays, the internet is full of various hair removal methods. Among the most common are razors and depilatory creams, and even waxing—which looks painful just at a glance. However, these methods only remove hair on the surface of the skin and often come with the risk of irritation or injury. The results are temporary, requiring repeated sessions that are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In contrast, laser hair removal (激光除毛) solves these problems more effectively, offering a simple and efficient way to get rid of unwanted hair.

Laser hair removal works based on the principle of selective photothermolysis (选择性光热作用). By adjusting the laser’s wavelength, energy, and pulse duration, the light can penetrate the skin and reach the root of the hair—the hair follicle (毛囊). The melanin in the hair follicle and hair shaft selectively absorbs the laser energy, which is then converted into heat to destroy the follicle’s ability to regrow hair. This process does not damage the surrounding tissue and achieves effective hair removal.

Since the laser only targets pigmented (black) hair, the surrounding structures such as sweat glands (汗腺) and sebaceous glands (皮脂腺) remain unaffected. There is no risk of scarring, no harm to the skin’s normal function, and the treatment is virtually painless. That’s why laser hair removal is currently considered one of the safest, fastest, and most long-lasting hair removal technologies—and it’s incredibly popular worldwide.

Theoretically, laser hair removal is permanent. However, in practical terms, it’s unlikely that absolutely no hair will ever regrow. Any residual hair tends to be finer, softer, and lighter in color. Overall, the results are highly satisfactory and can be considered permanent in effect.

It’s important to note that the laser only effectively destroys hair follicles in the anagen phase (生长期), which is when the hair contains the most melanin and is most sensitive to laser energy. Hair grows in cycles, and follicles in the catagen (退行期) or telogen (静止期) phases don’t respond well to treatment. As these hairs cycle into the anagen phase, additional treatments are needed to target them. Therefore, laser hair removal requires multiple sessions for optimal results—it’s not a one-and-done process.

Additionally, different body areas have varying hair growth cycles, hair density, and pigmentation, meaning the treatment interval and number of sessions must be customized. For instance, underarms, torso, and limbs may achieve satisfactory results in 3 to 6 sessions. However, fine hair on the upper lip often requires more treatments. That’s why we recommend booking a professional consultation at AI BEAUTY CLINIC, where a tailored treatment plan can be developed by medical experts. After a certain number of sessions, hair in the treated areas will be significantly reduced—leaving the skin silky smooth, just like a boiled egg.

At AI BEAUTY CLINIC, we use one of the most advanced laser hair removal devices on the market: the Cynosure Elite+™ (赛诺秀Elite +™). It combines 755nm and 1064nm dual wavelengths using patented MULTIPLEX™ technology, enhancing the effects of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for both hair removal and photorejuvenation (光子嫩肤). Its 18mm circular spot size allows for broader coverage, higher energy output, and deeper penetration. With two shots per second, it completes hair removal up to five times faster than traditional lasers. While conventional treatments may require a year or more, visible results can be achieved after just one session with the Elite+™, and permanent hair removal is typically achieved in six sessions.

In addition, its contactless floating technology ensures hygiene by avoiding direct skin contact, reducing bacterial transmission risks and offering a safer, more comfortable experience for every client.
