How to Say “逆光疹” in English?

Do you ever feel that your face isn’t completely smooth to the touch—yet there are no visible pimples or white-headed closed comedones? Then what are these tiny bumps?

These bumps aren’t exactly closed comedones, nor are they milia seeds/Oil Seeds. In Chinese, we call them 逆光疹, which roughly translates to “Skin Bumps” in English. The term isn’t a formal medical name, but it refers to clusters of tiny raised papules on the skin that become particularly noticeable under backlighting or side lighting.

From a dermatological perspective, “逆光疹 (Skin Bumps)” is more of a descriptive term than a diagnosis. It may appear as tiny red bumps caused by various conditions such as whiteheads, excess keratin (毛囊角化过度), or hormone-dependent dermatitis (激素依赖性皮炎). In everyday situations, most of these bumps are quite mild—no redness or itching, and they are often invisible under normal lighting. However, when they accumulate, the skin loses its porcelain-smooth texture, feeling rough to the touch and looking textured or uneven.

In fact, many people experience 逆光疹 in daily life. They are especially common in individuals with sensitive skin, hormone-dependent dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, photosensitive dermatitis (日光性皮炎), or rosacea skin (玫瑰痤疮).

There are many possible causes of 逆光疹 (Skin Bumps), including:

  • Impaired skin barrier

  • Overproduction of sebum (油脂分泌旺盛)

  • Inadequate cleansing

  • Use of irritating cosmetic products

More severe cases are often linked to skin inflammation, including:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis (caused by overactive sebaceous glands)

  • Hormone-dependent dermatitis (resulting from improper hormone use)

  • Hydration-induced dermatitis (caused by over-hydration)

  • Allergic skin reactions

All of these conditions can lead to clusters of small papules.

To improve 逆光疹, the first step is to repair the skin barrier and maintain proper skin care.

According to the skincare experts at Ai Beauty Clinic, a medical aesthetics clinic in London, the following two treatment approaches may help:

  1. HYDRAFACIAL
This treatment uses a patented 4-in-1 vacuum dual-flow VORTEX technology for deep cleansing while simultaneously working to restore the skin barrier.

  2. Acid Peel (刷酸)
This method helps to control excess oil production, exfoliate old dead skin cells, and stimulate epidermal metabolism, resulting in smoother skin texture.

Ai Beauty Clinic is accredited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the UK’s national medical regulatory body. The clinic has extensive clinical experience with Asian skin types. If your skin condition is more complex, it’s best to book a face-to-face consultation first.
