How to Say “皮肤暗沉” in English?

The term “灰头土脸” in Chinese vividly describes a dull and lifeless complexion, commonly referred to in English as dull skin. For example, you may leave home with a bright, fresh look in the morning, but by the afternoon, your makeup has oxidized, your foundation looks dark and patchy—darker than your neck even—and without makeup, your skin appears greyish, lackluster, and dehydrated. Certain areas like the corners of the mouth or the sides of the nose become especially shadowy, sometimes looking 200% duller. Over time, hyperpigmentation can also develop, resulting in a complexion that appears tired and unhealthy overall.

In English, dull skin is the standard translation for “皮肤暗沉.” While “dull” usually means boring or lackluster, in skincare terminology it refers to a lack of radiance, glow, or vibrance in the skin.

Dull skin often gives off a tired, low-energy look. It is actually a key sign of the skin ageing process, and should not be confused with dark skin or yellowish skin, which are mostly determined by genetics or sun exposure. Dullness is more about loss of natural radiance and pigment accumulation (hyperpigmentation). The common stereotype of the “黄脸婆” (yellow-faced woman) is essentially the result of skin dullness.

There are many everyday factors that contribute to dull skin, including:

  • Dry skin / Low moisture in the epidermis

  • Skin oxidation

  • Sluggish metabolism

  • Sun exposure leading to melanin overproduction

  • Prone to allergies and sensitive skin

  • Reduction in the oxygen carrying capacity of blood

Each of these can cause the skin to lose its natural glow and appear grey, rough, or uneven.

Unlike darker or yellow-toned skin, which is largely related to genetics or sun exposure, dull skin is mainly characterized by:

  • Rough / bumpy texture

  • Lack of natural shine

  • Pigmentation buildup

That’s why while aesthetic medicine (医美) can be used to treat both dull and dark/yellow skin, the approach differs significantly depending on the primary concern.

At Ai Beauty Clinic in London, professional dermatologists often recommend a two-pronged approach to brighten the skin:

  1. Prevent overproduction of melanin by avoiding triggers that stimulate melanocytes

  2. Interfere with melanin formation and metabolism after stimulation, while boosting the skin’s antioxidant capacity

Recommended treatments include:

  • Mesotherapy / 水光针
A top choice in skin care management, it delivers hydration and whitening factors deep into the dermis, offering far better absorption than topical skincare. It helps brighten skin tone and improve rough skin.

  • M22 IPL treatment / 光子嫩肤
Uses OPT (Optimal Pulse Technology) and the unique non-ablative fractional laser RESURFX. This non-invasive treatment improves pigmentation, redness, pore size, and fine lines, while also whitening and rejuvenating the skin.

  • PICOSURE Laser Pigmentation Treatment / 蜂巢皮秒激光
A more powerful option that directly targets and clears melanin, ideal for severe dullness and hyperpigmentation.

  • Hydrafacial / 海菲秀 & Acid Peel / 刷酸
Best for dullness caused by excess oil production. These treatments exfoliate old dead skin cells, clear clogged pores, inhibit oil secretion, and help brighten skin tone.

  • Skin whitening drip / 美白针
For those looking for full-body whitening, this drip is packed with antioxidants, helping to fight dullness from the inside out.

By choosing the right skincare and aesthetic solutions based on the cause of dullness, you can regain a radiant, luminous complexion and say goodbye to “灰头土脸” for good.
