How to Say “大肚腩/啤酒肚” in English?

When we talk about something “round and bulging,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Probably the belly, right? That’s because the abdomen is one of the easiest places on the body to accumulate fat. Regardless of gender, when people gain weight, it often shows up on the belly first. There are many Chinese terms to describe abdominal fat, such as 小肚子, 大肚腩, or 啤酒肚. So how do we say these in English?

It’s quite simple—belly is the standard term for “肚子.” So, 小肚子 or 大肚腩 can be referred to as belly fat. Another commonly used, slightly playful term is muffin top, which describes the layer of fat spilling over the waistband—just like how the top of a muffin spills over its paper cup. The imagery is quite self-explanatory.

The term 小肚子 often refers to fat accumulation in the lower abdomen, typically in women. This excessive accumulation of fat can be troublesome even for women who appear slim otherwise. On the other hand, 大肚腩 is a typical sign of overall weight gain—if your fat intake exceeds what you burn, a large belly is almost inevitable.

For men, especially those experiencing middle-aged weight gain, there’s a more vivid and specific term: beer belly or beer gut. These refer to the common phenomenon where men develop larger bellies as their metabolism slows down with age. The term keg (originally meaning “beer barrel”) can also be used informally to describe a beer belly or barrel-shaped waist.

As we all know, the waist and abdomen are among the easiest areas for fat to accumulate, which makes belly fat a universal issue—regardless of age or gender. Many factors contribute to this, such as a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, poor posture, and poor bowel movement. These issues often cause the belly to repeatedly bloat, making it a major concern for anyone trying to lose weight. Fat builds up easily, is stubborn to remove, and dieting alone often leads to rebound weight gain. Exercise helps, but progress is slow. So, what can you do? This is where aesthetic medicine steps in to offer solutions.

According to Ai Beauty Clinic, a UK-based clinic certified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), many people fall into the misconception that fat can be turned into muscle through exercise. In reality, fat reduction and muscle buildingare two separate processes—and both are essential for body sculpting.

If your goal is to reduce fat in the lower abdomen, you can start with non-invasive, pain-free treatments such as lipodissolve injection (溶脂针) or fat freezing treatment (冻脂). Once the fat is reduced, you can move on to toning and tightening the abdomen. If you’re aiming for visible abs lines (commonly known as “马甲线”), treatments like BTL EMSCULPT (美修斯) offer dual benefits: increasing muscle mass by 16% while reducing fat by 19%, delivering enhanced results. And yes—this approach is also suitable for men looking to turn a beer belly into six-pack abs!
